Nebraska Republicans held the Senate seat and the governor's office, while Democrats flipped the 2nd District. The 1st District remained uncalled early Wednesday, and unofficial legislative returns put the GOP's filibuster-proof majority in doubt.

## Ricketts wins first full Senate term over Osborn

### AP calls the race early Wednesday after a closer-than-usual statewide contest

The Associated Press declared Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts the winner over independent Dan Osborn at 2:27 a.m. Central time Wednesday. Osborn, an industrial mechanic and military veteran, was making his second run for the U.S. Senate as an independent, after challenging and losing to Republican Sen. Deb Fischer in 2024.

**Why it matters:** Ricketts, appointed in 2023 to replace Ben Sasse and elected in a 2024 special election, now begins his first full six-year term, keeping both Nebraska Senate seats in Republican hands.

## Powell flips Nebraska's 2nd District for Democrats

### Harding concedes the open Omaha-area seat Republican Don Bacon is leaving

Democrat Denise Powell defeated Republican Omaha City Council member Brinker Harding. Harding conceded around 9 p.m. Tuesday, and the AP called the race shortly before 11 p.m. with Powell leading 57.7% to 40%. She becomes the first Democrat in a decade to hold the seat, and the first Latina and first woman Nebraska has elected to federal office.

**Why it matters:** The result ends a decade of Republican control of the state's most politically divided district, and it changes the makeup of Nebraska's House delegation for the next two-year term.

## 1st District race between Flood and Backemeyer remains uncalled

### The Republican incumbent moves ahead after Backemeyer led early in the count

Republican Rep. Mike Flood led Democrat Chris Backemeyer 49.1% to 47.5% at 2 a.m. Wednesday, but the 1st District race was still too close to call. Backemeyer had led earlier in the count Tuesday evening. In the 3rd District, Rep. Adrian Smith won reelection comfortably, and the AP called that race around 10 p.m.

**Why it matters:** The 1st District outcome will decide whether Republicans keep two of Nebraska's three U.S. House seats or Democrats hold two of three after flipping the 2nd District.

## Legislative returns put the GOP's filibuster-proof majority in doubt

### Challengers lead in three Republican-held Omaha-area seats in unofficial results

Unofficial state results updated at 5:58 a.m. Wednesday show challengers ahead of Republican Sens. Brad von Gillern in District 4 and Merv Riepe in District 12, and Democrat Jess Goldoni leading in the open, Republican-held District 18\. Republicans held 33 of the 49 seats going into the election, exactly the number needed to end a filibuster, alongside 15 Democrats and one independent.

**Why it matters:** If all three leads hold, Republicans would fall below 33 votes, so contested bills would need cross-party support in a session facing a projected $1.2 billion deficit.

## Pillen wins second term as governor in a tighter race

### Walz has not conceded and says she will have more to say once votes are counted

The AP called the race for Gov. Jim Pillen just before 2 a.m. Wednesday. He led former state Sen. Lynne Walz 50.4% to 42.6%, a margin of more than 48,000 votes, while America First Party candidate Brett Lindstrom won 4.4%. Pillen won by 23 points in 2022, and the Examiner describes this race as the toughest for a Republican gubernatorial candidate since the 1990s.

**Why it matters:** Pillen begins a second term with a narrower margin than his 23-point win in 2022, after a campaign shaped by scrutiny of his budget handling and a no-bid state contract.

## Petersen poised to become secretary of state

### The Omaha businessman has pledged to restrict mail voting and conduct hand counts

Republican Scott Petersen led Democrat Sarah Slattery 52% to 42% early Wednesday, putting him in line to succeed Bob Evnen, whom he defeated in the May primary. Petersen has argued for restricting voting by mail and has promised full hand counts of races. He has also questioned whether the state's ballot-counting machines can be hacked.

**Why it matters:** As the state's top elections official, Petersen would be positioned to pursue the changes to mail voting and ballot counting he campaigned on, a shift from Evnen's approach.
