Fuel supply strains prompted an emergency order from Gov. Jim Pillen, while a federal judicial nomination, a $6 million Google energy-assistance commitment, and medical cannabis delays round out today's Nebraska developments.

## Pillen signs executive order to speed fuel deliveries as stations run low

### The order waives hours-of-service limits for fuel haulers through Nov. 18

Gov. Jim Pillen issued an executive order Monday temporarily waiving hours-of-service limits for trucks carrying gasoline and diesel, building on a Sept. 16 federal waiver that also lets fuel vehicles exceed weight limits by up to 10%. The order came as drivers reported empty pumps in Omaha, Papillion and La Vista, and an industry group said this fall's supply squeeze is worse than usual.

**Why it matters:** Tight supply during a compressed harvest affects farmers, freight and commuters, with regular gas averaging about $4.25 a gallon in Omaha, up from about $2.65 a year ago.

## Trump nominates former Nebraska solicitor general Eric Hamilton to federal bench

### Fischer recommended Hamilton for an upcoming U.S. District Court vacancy

President Donald Trump on Monday nominated Eric Hamilton, a deputy assistant attorney general at the Justice Department and former associate White House counsel, to fill an upcoming vacancy on the U.S. District Court for Nebraska. Hamilton previously served as Nebraska's solicitor general, and Sens. Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts both said they support his nomination.

**Why it matters:** If the Senate confirms him, Hamilton would hold a lifetime appointment on the trial court that hears federal cases arising in Nebraska, with both of the state's senators backing him.

## Google commits $6 million for Omaha-area energy assistance and weatherization

### OPPD and United Way of the Midlands will deploy the funds over 12 months

Google is contributing $6 million to a collaboration led by the Omaha Public Power District with United Way of the Midlands, including $1.875 million for community resilience hubs, $1.75 million for weatherization and $1.25 million for direct bill assistance. OPPD said weatherization can cut monthly utility bills by an estimated 20% to 30%.

**Why it matters:** The funding targets households with high energy burdens in OPPD's service area, where OPPD estimates weatherization alone can save $70 to $105 per household each month.

## Medical cannabis growers told testing rules could take up to two years

### Commissioners advised cultivators to plan on storing crops while regulations are written

The Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission told licensed cultivators they could wait one to two years for testing guidelines, which are required before products can be distributed or sold. One of the four licensed growers, Mahamota Cultivation Company, expects to harvest within seven weeks and said cannabis loses potency after three to six months in storage.

**Why it matters:** Because testing must come before any sales, the timeline governs when products reach patients under the voter-approved law and how long growers carry costs such as proposed $23,500 renewal fees.
